Refrigerants - R-22 phase out

R-22 phase out - how does it affect you?
R-22 is a type of refrigerant that has been used in air-conditioning units for many years. It has been discovered, however, that it was detrimental to the environment so there has been a phase-out of this product that has been ongoing for a number of years. In 2010, new units that contained R-22 were banned from being sold in the United States. The recycling of this compound from older units was also something that was promoted by the EPA as well. Eventually, this type of refrigerant is going to be completely phased out and at that time, it will not be possible for you to have the gas replaced in an air-conditioning unit which uses this refrigerant.
First of all, it's a good idea for you to understand what is legal and illegal about the use of R-22 refrigerant. It is legal for this product to be produced for use in equipment that exists and was made before 2010. There is also a certain amount of R-22 that is able to be imported and produced by companies, although those allowances may run out by the year 2020. As far as what is illegal concerning R-22, it is illegal to intentionally vent this gas into the atmosphere. Of course, that has always been a bad idea and any respectable Argyle air conditioning company would certainly never vent this gas intentionally. It is also necessary to repair or replace larger systems that have leak rates above a predefined limit. In addition, it is not legal to buy or use R-22, unless you are certified by the EPA.
